THEhistory records that the Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community was signed on March 25, 1957. What does not appear in the history books is that this signature was originally scheduled for March 21, 1957 and that it was postponed of 4 days. Yes, history books (all written by Europeans) do not dwell on this detail, which is very important for an African. It is therefore necessary to dig into the memories left by certain personalities present at this ceremony to discover that the date has been postponed by 4 days because of the banana. Yes, I know it may be funny, but it's very serious. Because, it is the beginning of a global strategy whose fundamental objective was the sustainability of the colonial economy, even beyond African independence. It took 4 days of negotiation to find how the colonial rentier economy, at the service of certain countries, was going to persevere even with the new union being created. In Italy, there was in fact a state monopoly on bananas from its colony, Somalia, and in France since 1932, there was a kind of task force to supply the country with bananas from 5 colonies: Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
The banana is thus revealed, from the Treaty of Rome, as an instrument of geostrategic control over African states, even before their independence, which is then recognized by their executioners. And because in 1960, France will be obliged to recognize the independence of the first 3 countries, everything will be done so that it is the French populations who remained in these former colonies to take care of the banana, directing the local population towards far less profitable crops such as cotton, coffee and cocoa. We'll see how.
