UA Tanzanian researcher has just won the African Innovation Prize awarded by the British Royal Academy of Engineering, for having developed a filtration system incorporating nanoparticles. The device is able to purify the water of all its toxic substances, whether of chemical or bacterial origin.
Drinking water in Africa, as elsewhere, is life. Thanks to the Millennium Development Goals set up by the United Nations, approximately 2,3 billion people since 1990 have been able to obtain sustainable access to this vital resource. But despite all this undeniable progress, major inequalities remain. Of the 750 million people in the world still deprived of drinking water, 90% live in rural areas and do not benefit from the progress made in their country. In Africa alone, according to UNICEF, people spend 40 billion hours each year walking to bring home some drinking water.
