Chaka was born in 1786. He is the son of Senza Ngakona, chief of the Abatetwa clan (a fraction of the Ngouni people). Her mother's name is Nandi. The union between Senza ngakona and Nandi is only tolerated because Senza Ngakona is one of the chiefs of the Abatetwa clan. Chaka is first supported by his father, then under the pressure of the latter's co-wives is sent back to his mother. It is then the beginning of a life of bullying, humiliation and oppression: a shepherd, Chaka is mistreated by his comrades, treated as a bastard, beaten and left for dead on a piece of land. Experiences that will forge and harden him.
In the company of his mother Nandi, Chaka then goes to live with his grandfather. Then, at Senza Ngakona's request, Ngomane, a chief of the Mtetwa tribe gives them a home and is kind to them. Chaka will not forget this: having become a powerful conqueror, he will make Ngomane his second.
