On already suspected that the loss of fertility was among the serious damage caused, a recent study points in this direction. A study which, if not hushed up, could have a big impact on decisions to be made in the future.
In 2009, nearly 3% of agricultural land was covered with GMOs with 134 million hectares, according to the ISAAA, which, each year, reports the cultivation of transgenic plants in the world. The issue of GMO food could well grow heavier soon as a new piece from Russia is about to be added.
This takes the form of a study, the most striking results of which have just been presented to the press in Russia as part of the opening in this country of Days of Defense against Environmental Risks. It is even mentioned by Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology in the United States and author of reference in the world of GMOs with in particular his book Seeds of Deception (literally "the seeds of deception") published in 2003. Conducted jointly by the National Association for Genetic Safety and the Institute of Ecology and Evolution, this Russian study lasted two years, with guinea pigs of Campbell breed hamsters, a breed that has a reproductive rate Student. Thus, Dr. Alexey Surov and his team fed for two years and in a conventional way small mammals, with the exception that some of them were more or less fed with GMO soybeans (imported regularly in Europe ) resistant to a herbicide.
Initially, four groups of five pairs (males / females) were formed: the first was fed with foods that did not contain soy, the second, meanwhile, followed a diet that included conventional soy, the third was fed with GMO soy in addition and finally the fourth group had meal trays in which the share of transgenic soy was even higher than in those of the third.
At the end of this first phase, all four groups had a total of 140 young. The study continued in a second phase by the selection of new pairs from each of these first groups. And, in the logic of the unfolding, the new pairs of the second generation also have small ones, creating in fact the third and last generation of guinea pigs. Thus, in the end, there were 52 births among third generation specimens that did not consume soybeans at all, 78 among those who consumed conventional soybeans.
