Wecyclers offers an innovative recycling service based on bicycles and a computer system. It is adapted to the needs of the inhabitants of informal settlements. It contributes to better management of urban waste in Lagos.
Founded in 2012, WECYCLERS is a social waste collection company dedicated to improving waste management in informal settlements in Lagos, Nigeria. The collection is done by means of scooters, named Wecycles, which circulate in these neighborhoods and recover the waste from the inhabitants. The waste is then sorted and distributed to local recycling plants. WECYCLERS rewards families with household items based on the volume of waste collected, thus introducing the population to recycling techniques. WECYCLERS represents to date more than 3400 partner homes, 50 jobs created, and 525 tons of waste collected.
“Waste management is one of the major problems of the poor people in Nigeria. We want to create a system that would make waste not a problem, but a solution for everyone.”- Bilikiss Adebiyi
