Benjamin Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 18, 1951. His mother Sonya, (from a family of 13 children), who will play a key role in his success drops out of college and finds herself married at 13. She divorces when Ben Carson is 8 years old. She brings up her two boys, Ben and her brother, on her own, earning a living with various odd jobs: she sometimes leads two or three at the same time.
Benjamin and his brother have some problems at school. In second, Benjamin is quite simply among the bottom of his class. His classmates make fun of him for calling him “dummy”, which makes him irascible. He confuses classes by making jokes and is a somewhat difficult student.
When Mrs. Carson realizes that her son's grades are declining, she decides to take matters into her own hands: “Benjamin, you're too smart to have grades like this,” she tells him. Then she decides to drastically reduce her children's television consumption. She also forbids them to go outside to have fun until they have finished their homework each day of school.
She demands that they read two books a week borrowed from the library and that they report back to her (despite the fact that she herself is illiterate, having left school very early). In a few weeks, Benjamin amazes his classmates (he identifies, for example, thanks to a book he has read a sample of rocks that one of his teachers brought to class). “That's when I realized I wasn't stupid,” he said later.
