Martin Gardiner Bernal is a professor emeritus at Cornell University, best known for his book “Black Athena”. This book re-examines the influence of Egyptian culture on the origins of ancient Greek culture and language.
The first volume of “Black Athena” had aroused in France, as before in the Anglo-Saxon world, passionate reactions. Its historical and sociological reconstruction of the transformations of the idea that has been formed of the origins of Greek civilization, and of the way in which it evolved according to the image that Europe had of its place and of its role in the world, has been hailed as a relentless demonstration or denounced as partisan.
