Né in Jamaica, Dutty Bookman is a slave of the Turpin dwelling in the northern plain of Santo Domingo (now Haiti). On the night of August 14, 1791, in Bois-Caïman, a remote place of the Lenormand dwelling in Mézy, this voodoo priest organized a ceremony for a large number of slaves. A black pig is sacrificed and the assistants drink its blood in order to become invulnerable. Boukman then ordered a general uprising. This takes place on the night of August 22 and lasts about ten days.
The rebels set the houses on fire
Boukman, accompanied by 200 other slaves, advances to Cape French. He perishes in combat, at the head of his troops. To make the idea that he was invulnerable lie, the settlers expose his head to Cape Town.
