Lhe Christian religion developed in antiquity, at the time of the great schools of thought, in the midst of pantheons of various gods and what the church fathers called ambient paganism. At that time, a religion was organized in two levels. The first level, called exoteric, was accessible to all, that is to say the profane and the second level, called esoteric, offered, following initiatory tests, access to revealed truths. Esoteric Christianity is both a study and an inquiry into this second level of understanding of the Christian religion. Annie Besant alternates between general concepts and her reasoned decoding of holy writings. Despite its attachment to theosophical principle, it is with a certain neutrality that it allows believers to experience the existence of another level of understanding through the analysis of the main Christian liturgies and offers laymen the opportunity to discover an esoteric reading of these texts.
