Les San are suing their government for the third time in order to be able to live in peace on their land, in the central Kalahari reserve.
The San in Botswana are suing the government for illegally denying them access to their ancestral territory in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. In 2006, the 700 San who had been expelled from the reserve four years earlier had won a lengthy lawsuit against the government in the Botswana High Court to obtain the right to return. Since then, the government has spared no effort to limit the number of San residents allowed to reside on the reserve.
- The government claims that the verdict only applies to 189 San on the original list of plaintiffs; he denies access to the reserve without a permit to those who are not on this list. As permits are only valid for one month, those which exceed their duration risk being arrested.
- The children of the 189 complainants can only enter the reserve freely until the age of 16, after which they must apply for a one-month permit.
