LKente is the quintessential Ghanaian fabric. Closely linked to royalty, this traditional fabric was developed in the 12th century by the Ashanti and Ewe peoples. Today, it is still present among the Akan populations also present in Côte d'Ivoire.
The kente is hand-woven from cotton yarn, silk forming complex patterns with traditional meanings. The Ashanti kente usually has brightly colored geometric patterns. The Ewe kente presents human or animal motifs.
