Marcus Garvey is one of Jamaica's first national heroes. Great defender of the cause of blacks. He visited Central America, Brazil, the United States…everywhere he deplored the dramatic situation of blacks. In 1914, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African (UNIA), the first international mass movement campaigning for the improvement of the lot of blacks. Its headquarters were transferred two years later to New York.
He is interested in the history of Africa, especially in Liberia where many black slaves were released by the Americans and to Ethiopia, the only black kingdom still independent. He is the promoter of the "Back to Africa" movement that developed in the 1920 years. However, his speech advocating the separation between blacks and whites is not unanimous among black leaders.
