Lhe time to heal the wounds has arrived. The time to bridge the gaps between us has arrived. The time to build has arrived. We have finally arrived at the end of our political emancipation. We pledge to free our people from the enslavement of poverty, deprivation, suffering, sexism and all other discrimination. We have managed to take the final steps towards freedom in conditions of relative peace. We are committed to building a complete, just and lasting peace. We have succeeded in planting hope in the hearts of millions of our people. We are committed to building a society in which all South Africans, whether black or white, can stand and walk without fear, sure of their inalienable right to human dignity, a rainbow nation, at peace with herself and with the world. As proof of its commitment to the renewal of our country, the new interim government of national unity takes the decision, as an urgent matter, to grant amnesty to the various categories of compatriots currently serving their prison terms. We dedicate this day to all the heroes and heroines of this country and the rest of the world who sacrificed themselves or gave their lives so that we can be free. Their dreams have come true. Freedom is their reward. We feel both humble and proud of the honor and privilege that the people of South Africa bestow on us by appointing us as the first president of a democratic, non-racist and non-sexist unity government.
We are aware that the road to freedom is not easy. We realize that none of us can do it alone.
We must therefore act together, as a united people, towards national reconciliation, towards the building of a nation, towards the birth of a new world.
May justice be the same for all.
Peace exists for all.
Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.
May each of us know that our body, mind and soul have been released so that they can flourish.
May this magnificent country never, never again relive the experience of the oppression of one another, nor suffer again the indignity of being the outcast of the world.
Let freedom reign.
May the sun never set on such a brilliant human achievement.
