Ln October 10, 2011, the International Day Against the Death Penalty, the United States holds a strange record. They bring together a quarter of the world's prison population, and rank fifth in terms of capital executions behind China, Iran, North Korea and Yemen. Since its reintroduction in 1976, the death penalty is applied in 34 out of 50 states, Net has claimed the lives of 1254 people, the majority of them black men. Nearly 3330 people are currently awaiting their sentence on death row.
Behind the figures and the findings, a question torments abolitionist activists and researchers. How does the death penalty fit into a modern democracy? To try to answer this question, Arnaud Gaillard, sociologist, visited eight American states where the death penalty is in force. He drew from it a book of testimonies and analysis, 999 (Max Milo, 2011) and a film, Honk (released on November 9).
