Lhe ties which united Egypt and Greece are strong and distant and even if the zoomorphic gods caused the terror of Herodotus, the fact remains that the two cultures never ceased to influence each other. Thus the god Thoth, author of religious books according to Egyptian belief, was identified with Hermes and a new literature, in Greek, but drawing on Egyptian fervor, developed under the name of Hermes. These texts, which are grouped together under the name of Corpus Hermeticum, bring together the speeches allegedly made by Hermes, and serve as references to Hermetic mysticism, in many ways similar to Orphism. Hermeticism, a mystical thought of the order of revelation comprises a cosmogony, an anthropology and an eschatology, and has produced numerous treatises on astrology.
