La Kora is a traditional African stringed musical instrument, rather from West Africa: Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Gambia, Guinea… It is the instrument par excellence of the Djelibas (traditional “communicators”).
According to legend, the first Kora was the personal instrument of a female genius who lived in the Kansala caves in The Gambia. Impressed and moved by the music of the instrument, a great warlord, Tiramakhan Traore, decided to dispossess the woman-genius. Helped by his hunting companions, he recovered the instrument which fell to Djelimaly, the group's djeliba. Djelimaly passed it on to his son Kamba. And so she passed from father to son.
