UA group of Ugandan students from Makerere University's Faculty of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, built Uganda's first electric car (Kiira EV). The car was successfully tested on November 1, 2011 at Makerere University. It is still only a prototype, but most of the components of the two-seater were designed and built in Uganda: The carriage, the combustion system, etc. The project of this car called VDP (Vehicle Design Project) is one of the initiatives funded and supported by the Ugandan President.
The vehicle's batteries have around 80 km of range and electricity is the only source of energy used to run the Kiira EV (making it a very quiet car). Other vehicles are to be manufactured, including a 7-seater and a 30-seater van with around 200 km of range thanks to a solar panel.
