Episode 1: 1400-1900, The Trauma of Slavery
The following only concerns black women in America. It is based on the 2001 Hair Story by D.Ayana Bryrd and Lori L.Tharp, and summarized by the blogger African American Abagond. I translated it for informational purposes only (with kind permission), for all those who like me would wonder about the story of the Western Black woman's relationship to her frizzy hair.
Most blacks in America come fromSub-Saharan Africa. In this part of the world the hair goes from frizzyly wavy and fluid. In the years 1400 et 1500, There were all kinds of beautiful hairstyles. African women had the right types of oils and combs to comb their hair. Certainly took hours, others even days. Only the crazy and the bereaved did not take care of their hair.
