Viola Davis was crowned Sunday night at the Emmy Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series for “How to get away with murder”. Its price is historic: she is the first black woman to win this award in the history of American television.
“The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is the opportunity (…) You can't win an Emmy for roles that just don't exist,” said Viola Davis by accepting his award in Los Angeles. The actress plays the role ofa lawyer and law professor which has a major influence on many of his students, some of whom are involved in murder.
She thanked the executives of ABC, which airs the series, as well as producer Shonda Rhimes, herself black, for "redefining what it means to be beautiful, sexy, a woman of decision, to be black". She also paid tribute to other actresses, including Taraji P. Henson (heroine of the “Empire” series), Kerry Washington (lead actress of the “Scandal” series) and Halle Berry (best actress at the Oscars in 2002).
