DFrom Nelson Mandela to Abdoulaye Wade, the fashion for African leaders and intellectuals is to invoke the "African renaissance" for the continent's new start. Are we sure that those who speak of African renaissance really know what it is? Are we sure they are all talking about the same thing?
"Rebirth" comes from the verb reborn, that is to say, to be born again. To be reborn one must be dead. The cultural death that will be worth to Europe, this need to be born again is the Middle Ages, a long period of 1000 years, from the 5th to the 15th century ruled by the aristocracy and the Roman Catholic Church, by spirituality and the divine power of the king. To be reborn, you need thinkers, you need rebels, you need people who have had the courage to take the path of the intellectual maquis with positions that have often earned them the cost of paying with their own lives, so that the whole of society take the opportunity to get out of because the European renaissance was born with the "death of god", it is the triumph of secularism, it is the victory of the individual conscience first, and then collective over the hierarchical authority of the divine king and the Church. To be reborn, has Africa taken the road to the triumph of secularism? Is Africa on the road to celebrating the total break with the system of colonial rentier spoliation?
