Who was Betty Shabazz
Eessentially known for having been the wife of Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz was a true activist and a key figure in African-American history. Betty Dean Sanders was born in Detroit and was hired at age 11 by a couple of community activists advocating exclusively black entrepreneurship. However, Betty Shabazz will regret that they did not make her more aware of the issue of racism in America which they considered, like many black Americans of the time, as a taboo.
After graduating from high school, Betty Sanders leaves Detroit so she can study at the Tuskegee Institute. She is immediately shocked by the context of racial segregation which then reigned in the South. Exasperated by recurring injustices, she then left the South of the United States for the East Coast and found a job as a nurse in 1953. Shortly after, she was invited by one of her nursing colleagues to participate in an evening organized by the Nation of Islam. During this evening, she meets Malcolm X.
