Francisco del Rosario Sánchez was a lawyer and politician from Hispaniola, co-founder, with Juan Pablo Duarte and Ramón Matías Mella, of what is now the Dominican Republic. The three of them are the Padres de la Patria (fathers of the country). He succeeded Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez, in the fight for independence during his exile and proclaimed the independence of the Dominican Republic on February 27, 1844.
Francisco del Rosario Sánchez was born in Santo Domingo on March 9, 1817. His father was called Narciso Sánchez Ramona and his mother was called Olalla del Rosario de Belén Fernández, she was Afro-descendant. Her parents were not married at the time of her birth. Francisco was the oldest of eleven children, one of whom, Socorro Sánchez, established himself as a journalist. Sánchez was also the nephew on the paternal side of activist María Trinidad Sánchez.
First educated by his mother, he later became a disciple of the Peruvian priest Gaspar Hernández, who developed his patriotic spirit. Although self-taught, he mastered French and Latin, acquired a considerable culture and distinguished himself in his legal pleadings.
He wrote the manifesto for the independence of January 16, 1844, a true act of independence and was the first to hoist the Dominican national flag on February 27, 1844.
Arrested following an El Cercado ambush where he was injured, he was transported to San Juan de Maguana where he was sentenced to death and shot on July 4, 1861 with 20 of his comrades at 16 p.m. local time. His remains rest with those of the two other Fathers of the Fatherland Juan Pablo Duarte and Ramon Matias Mella in a mausoleum “the altar of the Fatherland” located in the park of independence near the Puerta del Conde where was proclaimed independence. This monument was inaugurated on February 27, 1976.
Sanchez had children with several women, the first Felicita Martinez, with whom he had Monica. A few years later had Maria Hinojosa Evarista (Goyita) with Marie Gregoria. Then, with the Curacaoannaise Leoncia Leydes Rodríguez he had Léoncia. Then later he is the father of Petronila with the mother Mercedes Pembrén Chevalier. Married April 4, 1849 to Balbina Peña Pérez, who bore him two sons Juan Francisco and Manuel de Jesús. Later Juan Francisco became Minister of Finance in the government of Ulises Heureaux and joined the cabinet of President Carlos Morales Languasco.
