FRederick Douglass is one of the most remarkable African-American figures of his time. He is one of the major speakers and authors in the history of the United States.
Born a slave in Maryland, he was separated from his mother at a young age and never knew the identity of his white father. When he was eight he was sent to Baltimore to work for Hugh and Sophia Auld. In defiance of state law, Sophia taught him to read. Her husband disapproved of her, arguing that a slave who could read could only become dissatisfied with his position and demand his freedom.
