Lhe time spent on YouTube by Africans is growing at a tremendous rate, at the rate of 70% per year. However, user experience remains weak on the platform, due to the poor quality of the internet. People are basically using the 2G connection and an average download speed of 50kb / second. This diagnosis is made by Heather Thompson Rivera, Head of Partnerships at YouTube.
She spoke during the “Digital Entertainment Africa” session at AfricaCom 2015, the major digital event.
Heather Thompson Rivera believes there is still a long way to go on the continent to enable better access and use of YouTube. The offline function is then presented as a solution adapted to the continent, especially south of the Sahara where, despite the explosion of smartphones, the problem remains the non-access to affordable data at high speed.
