THEforgotten story of slavery perpetrated by Arabs in Europe, the Maghreb, and the Middle East. The Barbary Coast, which stretches from Morocco to modern Libya, was home to a thriving human abduction industry from around 1500 to 1800. The major slave capitals were Salé in Morocco, Tunis, Algiers and Tripoli. During this period more slaves were taken south across the Mediterranean than west across the Atlantic. Some were returned to their families for ransom, some were used for forced labor in North Africa, and the less fortunate died on duty as slaves on the galleys. Christian slaves were often so plentiful and cheap that there was no point in dealing with them. Many owners made them work until death.
