En despite religious and ethnic conflicts, northern Sudan has not finished revealing its secrets. This region is reminiscent of Egypt a century ago. The discovery, on January 11, 2003, of seven monumental statues of kings of the XXVth dynasty by the Swiss archaeological mission of Kerma led by Charles Bonnet revealed to the world the African pharaohs of Sudan. Born in Kerma, with the first kingdoms of southern Saharan (3000 BC), she experienced the Egyptian invasion and colonization at the time of the 1400th dynasty (around 4 BC). The imprint of these great builders fascinates us today. Few roads can follow the Nile in a northerly direction from Khartoum. A 4 x XNUMX and a driver-guide are mandatory (as well as good equipment).
The journey begins with the end of the story, that is, Meroe, located a three hour (tarmac) drive from Khartoum. It was around 591 BC that the Kushites transferred their capital further south, where today stands the Meroitic necropolis, and more than 40 royal and princely pyramids. A site of stunning beauty, planted in the middle of an ocher desert, with nothing around but the wild silence which gives the place all its magic and grandeur. German archaeologist Friedrich Hinkel, an 83-year-old giant, one of the emblematic figures of Sudanese archeology, has studied all of the country's pyramids, finding that those of Nuri, further north, are the most perfect. One of the problems encountered by all archaeologists is that of the Meroitic language. Appeared in 170 BC - until then, the Kushites used hieroglyphic writing - it is considered “the Etruscan of Africa”, one of the most difficult enigmas bequeathed by ancient civilizations.
