UA book on Louis 14 and Africa immediately raises some questions: Why write about the relations that this king maintained with this continent and not on those of François 1er, Louis 13, Louis 15 or even those of Napoleon Bonaparte? In a word, why the choice of this French dignitary rather than another? Because, to tell the truth, we know nothing of the contacts that these French sovereigns and emperors had with Africa. Before the division of this continent between the Westerners and the beginning of the policies of its colonization, did the French leaders already have an African policy; along with the slave trade.
Tidiane Diakité does not leave the reader with these questions for long. From the first chapter, he fully satisfies his curiosity. Indeed, very quickly, the reader understands that Louis 14 is the one who laid the bases of a true African policy of France; policy whose permanence through time until the 21st century is quite striking. On the other hand, more than any other period, the century of Louis 14 is the one which left the most traces on Africa in French archives. Louis 14 therefore imposes itself on us when we want to probe the source of the relations between France and black Africa.
