Dince the 1960s, at the dawn of independence, the Afro-pessimistic vulgate has described Africa as a continent that is “off to a bad start”, “adrift”. At the height of the AIDS pandemic, augurs even advocated the outright extinction of life on the continent. It is an understatement to say the symbolic violence with which the destiny of millions of individuals has been envisaged under the mode of failure, handicap, even deficiency and congenital defect. More recently, a rhetoric of euphoria and optimism has emerged. The future would henceforth be African. The continent is making progress in terms of economic growth and the outlook is good. The availability of natural resources and raw materials helping, the African continent would be the future Eldorado of world capitalism. Here too, it is the dreams produced by others that are expressed. To think of Africa is to clear a dense and thick forest, it is to redefine life other than in terms of quantity and greed. In these times of crisis of meaning of a technical civilization no longer knowing where to turn, the challenge then consists in scrutinizing the political, the economic, the social, the symbolic, artistic creativity. It also consists of thinking about a civilization project that puts man at the heart of its concerns by proposing a better balance between the economic, cultural and spiritual orders. This fascinating essay operates a real conceptual decolonization, and calls for a self-reinvention of the African continent.
