Che volume covers the history of Africa from the beginning of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. Two major themes emerge. The further internal development of the states and cultures of Africa during this period, the increasing participation of Africa in international trade.
In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquering Egypt and establishing regencies in Tripoli, Tunis, Algiers. South of the Sahara, the collapse of some older powers (Songhay Empire, kingdoms of western Sudan, Christian Ethiopia) coincides with the emergence of new power bases (Ashanti kingdoms, Dahomey, Sakalava).
