DIn most parts of Africa, Western medicine is far from having done away with the practice of traditional therapies practiced by healers, fetishists or the brotherhood of hunters. The lack of adapted structures, doctors, or the prohibitive cost of care only partly explain this survival. Indeed, for the great majority of the population, a sick body is often the prey of supernatural forces or bad spells which cannot be removed by simple allopathic procedures. An anthropologist and a photographer, both familiar with Mali, wanted to explore more closely these ancestral practices, perpetuated in town and in the bush, which combine divination, exorcism, appeal to fetishes but also herbal prescriptions and bodily manipulations. They met these unusual practitioners, central figures of African society, whose real knowledge gradually tends to disappear. The purely Cartesian medicine is often questioned, it is not useless to discover these alternatives of care where the force of the spirit obtains astonishing results.
