THEAfrica was long considered a continent buried in its rurality. Historians of Africa have written relatively little on cities, especially old ones (precolonial), they have left this field to a few anthropologists and, from the colonial era, to geographers. It is not a question, here, of “rehabilitating” purely and simply a forgotten urban Africa: The sub-Saharan continent was, for the very large majority, populated by peasants, more than 95, if not 99%. But, for few and minority that they were, the cities were not less present, as elsewhere, throughout its history. What is more, they have played an essential role as a melting pot and cultural diffuser, as an accelerator of social and political change. They have, in their own way, exerted an influence out of all proportion to their apparent dimensions.
