Chis volume covers the history of Africa, from the beginning of the 19th century, until the seizure of the European colonial powers on the continent, from 1880.
Despite the growing assertion of European commercial, religious and political presence during this period, outside influences did not have a direct impact on most African societies, where there has been a series of attempts to culturally separate modernization, enlargement and development of existing structures. Two defining sequences of events, which owe virtually nothing to foreign influences, feature prominently in eight of the chapters in this volume.
