THEBasic teaching of Buddhism is based on the “4 noble truths” (the last of which is the eightfold noble path) and on the “3 marks of existence”. It is both the foundation of Buddhism and the basis of the common core of this philosophical doctrine, which can be compared, as we have seen, to a great tree, with its roots, trunk and multiple branches. All the Buddhist schools, wherever they come from, from Theravada (Vehicle of the Ancients) or multiple branches of the Mahayana (Great Vehicle), all without exception, claim this base, this common base of Buddhism.
It is also the first teaching to date, since, according to tradition, this was the content of the first speech given by the Buddha gautama after his enlightenment, to Isipatana (Now Sarnath), near Varanasi, in the Gazelles Park. This speech, called Dhamma cakka-ppavattana-sutta (Sutra of setting in motion the Wheel of the Law addressed to the 5 samana old companions of the Buddha, who will also become his first disciples:
