Lhe instructions of Shuruppak are among the oldest known works of literature, since the oldest versions found are written on fragmentary tablets unearthed dating from around 2500 BC. The text is similar to the ten commandments of the first biblical testament with, among other things, allusions to filial respect (lines 255-260), theft (lines 28-31), rape (lines 61-62) and murder (lines 252- 253). Additionally, it indicates how to properly manage and organize a kingdom, providing instructions on slaves (lines 28-31, 49,154-164, 193-201) and social organization. The call to the son is recurrent, recalling the texts of biblical proverbs.
The instructions Shuruppak is the oldest of the texts of wisdom, uttering a moral ideal. The text claims to be addressed by the sovereign Shuruppak to his son, Ziusudra the hero of the flood story who, like Noah, survived the destruction of mankind and became the favorite of the gods.
