THEidea of God is not an innate notion, but an acquired one, and we have only one thing in common with the theologies. But while we attribute to all phenomena proceeding from infinite and unlimited space, from duration and from movement, material, natural, sensible and known causes (to us at least), the theists attribute to them spiritual, supernatural, unintelligible and unknown.
The God of the Theologians is simply an imaginary power, a werewolf, as d'Holbach says, a power that has never yet manifested itself. Our main purpose is to deliver humanity from this nightmare, to teach man to practice virtue for its own sake and to walk through life relying on itself, instead of leaning on a crutch theological, direct cause, for countless ages, of almost all human misery. We can be called pantheists – agnostics NEVER. If we want to accept and consider as God our ONE LIFE, immutable and unconscious in its eternity, we can do it, thus preserving, again, a prodigiously badly chosen term. Only, it will be necessary to say with Spinoza that there does not exist and that we cannot conceive of any other substance than God, or, as this famous and unfortunate philosopher expresses himself in his fourteenth proposition, “Praeter Deum neque dart neque concipi potest substantia” and thus become Pantheists… One must be a Theologian nourished by mystery and the most absurd supernaturalism to imagine an existing self-being, necessarily infinite and omnipresent, outside the manifested and unlimited universe! The word infinite is a simple negation excluding the idea of limits. It is obvious that an independent and omnipresent being cannot – be limited by anything external to it and that nothing can exist outside of it – not even the void; So where to place the material? where to place this manifested universe, even admitting that the latter is limited? If we ask theists: “Is your God vacuum, space or matter?”, they will answer: “No”… And yet they maintain that God, without being himself matter, penetrates it. When we speak of our One Life, we also say that it penetrates every atom of matter, much more, that it is its essence and that, therefore, it not only has correspondences with matter, but also possesses all its properties, etc. ; consequently, that it is material, that it is matter itself. How intelligence can it proceed or emanate from non-intelligence. How can a highly intelligent humanity, how man, the crowning achievement of reason, come out of blind, unintelligent law or force?
