Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the last child of a family of 11, was born August 17, 1887 in St Ann's Bay, Jamaica in 1887. He lives in conditions of extreme poverty. So extreme, that all of her siblings, with the exception of her sister Indiana, will die in infancy. But, the Garvey family had not always been poor. His father, a learned mason, sometimes served as a lawyer and for a time owned a private library. And it is undoubtedly from him that Marcus Garvey derives his passion for reading. Due to lack of financial means, Garvey was forced to abandon his studies at the age of 14 to enter the workforce.
Passionate about reading, he began to work in a printing house where he quickly developed. Very early on, he obtained great responsibility and an important status within the company. The man could have stopped there. But already there is a desire to fight against injustice and inequality. In fact, in 1907, at the age of 20, he took part in the first strike of the Jamaican printers' unions, which led to him appearing on a blacklist and then being dismissed.
