J 'I wrote this little talk a few years ago as part of humanitarian missions in Burkina Faso and would like to share it with those who have the time and the inclination to read it. It is not intended to be exhaustive, but may make it possible to illuminate certain lanterns. This text is not controversial, and the analysis - sometimes simplistic I agree, but it is the price of popularization - is based on my personal experience. Here is the first part: Thoughts on the cultural difference Europe / Black Africa.
The most useful help that we can give you here is to share with you some notions relating to the primordial differences between our culture and the culture of the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa. About the cultural difference: There is a very important gap between African culture (West Africa) and our European culture or more broadly, Western. The origin of this gap can first of all be explained by the fact that Europeans have a so-called “written” culture while Africans have a so-called “oral” culture. This difference is essential and when it is assimilated and understood, a lot of behaviors that were surprising to you as a Westerner until now will become more understandable to you. In particular, you will avoid making serious mistakes and provoking a “diplomatic incident”. I am exaggerating of course, but there are still a few things you need to know to avoid getting bogged down in awkward situations.
