Le Popol-Vuh (also transcribed Pop Wuh or Popol Wu'uj from the expression Quiché literally meaning "book of the mat", generally translated as "Book of the Council" or "Book of the Community") is a Mayan mythological text written in Quiché during colonial times. It is the most important document we have on the myths of the Mayan civilization. It is a kind of Mayan “Bible”.
The Popol Vuh is separated into three distinct parts:
The Terraforming of the Earth by a group of creators, the Great Ancestors. First of all, the genesis of the world is described, which bears certain resemblances to the Biblical Cosmogony. From the original nothingness, the Gods decided to create the world, to make it material and to populate it with creatures in order to be worshiped.
