Une brand new bicycle is appearing on the market: The bamboo bicycle. The idea of creating a bicycle from this material is a concept emanating from a young Ghanaian woman named Bernice Dapaah. She started this project as part of the Clinton Global Initiative University which brings together hundreds of students, academics and experts each year. The theme of this year's edition is the development of sustainable and ecological projects.
According to the initiator of the bamboo bike, it all started with the observation that the bicycles used in Ghana were poorly suited to the needs of the population. They only allowed driving on roads in good condition, a luxury almost non-existent in rural areas. «These are bicycles that we import, which does not create jobs and develop people's skills. Also, I realized that there is a lot of wild bamboo in Ghana, and that it is a resource that can be used to make bicycles.» she entrusts to the daily The Point. The bamboo bike is a success and is causing a sensation in the country. Bernice Dapaah wins many awards and by surfing on her brand new notoriety, she decides to create jobs, mainly for the fairer sex of her country. 35 women are now employed in the manufacturing process of these bikes.
