EElizabeth “Bessie” Coleman became the first black female international pilot. American flight schools refused her entry because of her gender and race. She then enrolled in the aviation school of the Caudron brothers. Several months later, she obtained an international pilot's license granted for the first time to an African-American woman. After training in France, Germany and Holland, Coleman returned to the United States in 1922. She began doing stunts and acrobats as a pilot. People flocked to see “Brave Bessie” performed figure eight, barrel rolls, parachute tricks etc.
Coleman had planned to use his earnings to start an aviation school for African Americans, but his career was tragically ended in 1926, when an equipment malfunction led to his death. Thousands of people attended the funeral of the beloved aviator. She later became the inspiration for the creation of the “Bessie Coleman Aero Club”, an organization created in 1929 to promote African-American aviation.
