THEankh is the hieroglyph which means "life". The gods can hold it by the buckle, or carry one in each hand, arms crossed across the chest. This symbol was called crux ansata in Latin ("handle cross"). Egyptologists are still unaware of what this drawing materializes. Some have speculated that it was a stylized uterus. This hypothesis was not very successful. Alan Gardiner imagined it to be the strap of a sandal, with the buckle going around the ankle. The word for the sandal strap is spelled the same, although it may be pronounced differently.
Ankh frequently appears in Egyptian art, especially in tomb paintings; it often appears at the fingertips of a god or goddess, in images showing the deities of the afterlife giving the gift of life to the mummy of the deceased. This symbol was often worn as an amulet by the Egyptians, either alone or in association with two other hieroglyphs meaning "strength" and "health". The mirrors were often made in the form of ankh.
A similar symbol was used to represent the Roman goddess Venus. Known as the mirror of Venus, it is most often associated with the uterus. In astrology, it represents the planet Venus, and in alchemy the element copper; in biology, it identifies the female sex.
The ankh is widely used in popular culture as a means of communicating instantly with distant history, mysterious vital forces and / or spiritual magic.
The ankh is the symbol of the united male and female sexual organs, attributes of Ardhanari , the androgynous representation of shiva.
The Egyptians by making a symbol which means “life” (the meeting of the male and female sex indeed allow the life…) thus very related to the Indian symbolism.
Also note on Indian Ardhanari the Uraeus: it represents a cobra erected as in Egypt (another attributes of the pharaohs) et the flower with 7 petals as in predynastic Egypt.
