François-Domenica Bréda is known as Toussaint Louverture. He is one of the great names of the Haitian revolution and the first black to become governor of a colony. He was born a slave around 1743 in the French colony of Saint Domingue.
His teacher, the Count of Breda, strongly encouraged him to learn to read and write. He developed a passion for books. His readings had a great influence on his political life.
