MAlcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother, Louise Norton Little, was a busy housewife with eight children in the family. Her father, Earl Little, was a Baptist minister who was a strong supporter of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Earl has had death threats from white supremacists, causing the family to move twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday.
Two years later, Earl's body was found lying across the city's trolley tracks. Louise suffered emotional breakdown several years after her husband's death and was committed to a mental institution. Her children were divided between various foster homes and orphanages.
Growing Up
Malcolm was a smart, focused student. He is a junior high school graduate at the head of his class. However, when a favorite teacher told Malcolm his dream of becoming a lawyer had “no realistic goal for a nigger,” Malcolm lost interest in school. He quit, spent some time in Boston, Massachusetts working odd jobs, then moved to Harlem, New York, where he committed petty crimes. In 1942, Malcolm coordinated various rings of narcotics, prostitution, and gambling.
Malcolm and his pal, Malcolm "Shorty" Jarvis, have moved back to Boston. In 1946 they were arrested and convicted on burglary charges, and Malcolm was sentenced to 10 years in prison. (He was paroled after serving seven years.) Recalling his days at school, he used the time to continue his education. It was during this time of self-enlightenment that Malcolm, Brother Reginald would visit and discuss his recent conversion to Islam. Reginald belonged to the religious organization Nation of Islam (NOI).
