PPublished in 1950, that is to say at the end of the Second World War, during that of Korea and shortly before that of Algeria, the pamphlet of Aimé Césaire is not only one of the greatest founding texts of the anticolonialism but also a violent indictment against capitalism and the European bourgeoisie. The author of Notebook of a return to the native country, at the time member of the Communist Party, strongly denounces there the barbarism of this decadent Western bourgeoisie which found an outlet by colonizing the countries of the Third World in the name of a supposedly superior “civilization”, submitting the peoples to oppression and hatred, to violence and destruction, to exploitation and looting, to racism and fascism. With this vibrant indictment that has now gone down in history, the founder of the literary movement of Négritude makes the relentless, still current, trial of an “indefensible” Europe. To those who are still tempted to take account of the “positive” aspects of colonization today, his pamphlet sounds like a reminder.
