An the early 8th century, black knights from Africa invaded Spain, Portugal and France. Their military superiority and their many victories impressed the people of the Middle Ages who bequeathed us many historical testimonies on their presence which generated mixed families. Many French families bear the name of their black patriarch as a surname (Moraux, Morel, Morand). These Africans lived in France, Spain, Italy, England and Portugal where they exercised power in certain regions. They lived in fortified castles or in cities and lived in perfect harmony with the population. The testimony of Fabre d'Olivet (1767-1825), allows us to appreciate the perception that Europe had of blacks: "The white men saw for the first time, in the light of their burnt forests, men of a color different from theirs. but this difference did not strike them alone. These men covered with extraordinary clothes, with resplendent breastplates, wielded with skill formidable weapons, unknown in these regions. They had a large cavalry. They fought on chariots and even on formidable towers which advanced like colossi, throwing death on all sides. The first movement was for stupor. A few white women whom these foreigners seized and whose goodwill they sought to capture were not difficult to seduce. They were too unhappy in their own country to have nurtured a love for it.”
Other testimonies of historians, take up the elements of this story by providing additional information: “The whites had just been awakened by the attacks of the blacks who began to invade it from the south of Europe. Unequal fight at the start. The whites, half-savages, leaving their forests and their lake dwellings, had no other resources than their bows, their spears and their stone-pointed arrows.
The blacks had weapons of iron, armor of bronze, all the resources of an industrious civilization and their cyclopean cities. The salvation of the whites was their forests where, like wild animals, they could hide to rebound at the right moment”.
