Abla Pokou is the niece of Emperor Ossei Tutu of the Ashanti Confederation of Ghana. Emperor Tutu, a great builder, gave a remarkable boost to the empire and made the rich region of Koumassi a capital whose streets were said to be paved with gold bars. After his death around 1720, his uterine nephew, Opokou Ware, Pokou's older brother, somehow maintained the cohesion of the country. But thirty years later, in 1749, the latter's disappearance caused a succession quarrel between his young brother, designated heir, and one of his uncles, who set the country on fire and blood.
When Prince Dakon was assassinated, Pokou, appalled by the fratricidal struggle that was tearing Koumassi apart, immediately understood what fate awaited the clan of his unfortunate brother. Houses burned, fields sacked, herds stolen, looted goods, told him that there remained only exile to avoid a tragedy. She had already seen too much carnage in this tormented kingdom! Rivalries, insurrections, vengeance, chastisement, exodus: whole families paid ruthlessly for their lives the ambition of a son or the decay of a father.
