Mandombe in kikongo means for black people. Invented by the Congolese Wabeladio Payi in 1978 in Mbanza Ngungu in the province of Bas-Congo in the DRC, the Mandombe writing contains within it a set of graphic signs starting from African realities. It is a transcription corresponding to African linguistic systems, which allows any Negro-African language to reproduce its sounds without difficulty.
Mandombe writing is managed by the Center for Negro-African Writing (CENA), a center which aims to teach black-African writing to Africans and the African diaspora; to supervise people who have learned Negro-African writing; to popularize and promote linguistic and scientific knowledge of Negro-African writing from the Mandombe academy.
