William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, one of the greatest figures in black American history, was the first black man to earn a doctorate at Harvard. He is at the origin of the first sociological and historical research on the Afro-American community. A political activist, he founded the Niagara movement in 1905, then co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1910.
While he could present himself otherwise, given the hard ordeal of institutional racism which was then destroying the lives of so many blacks, this young man with a fair complexion, a Harvard graduate where he studied History and Philosophy, wants to be Black and "proud of it". Better still, he wants to put an end to the silent conspiracy surrounding the black question in the United States. He simply wants "to make it possible for a man to be both a Black and an American, without being cursed by his fellows, without them spitting on him, without the doors of opportunity being closed. him ”(Du Bois, 1903). He will then devote his whole life to the emancipation of blacks in the United States and in the rest of the world. "I am a Negro, and I pride myself on this name. I am proud of the black blood flowing in my veins ”.
