NIn Massachusetts, Latimer grew up in Boston. At 17, after his service in President Lincoln's Navy during the American Civil War, he returned to Boston. Gifted for drawing, he was hired by the firm Crosby & Gould. He will spend 11 years there.
His first patent, which relates to a lavatory for railroad cars, was registered on February 10, 1874. A moment assistant to Alexander Graham Bell, for whom he produced the technical drawings and descriptions required for the filing of telephone patent; designer at Maxim Hiram, inventor of the machine gun and owner of the United Electric Lighting Company in Bridgeport. He finally joined Edison Company as an engineer.
