Zumbi Dos Palmares was one of the most important warlords of the autonomous kingdom of Palmares, founded in the 17th century by insurgent slaves in northeastern Brazil. At the age of 20, he fled and took the lead in the Black Resistance. With the support of a strong handful of insurgents, Zumbi valiantly resisted for fifteen years. He becomes an icon for his own people. On November 20, 1695, betrayed by his family, he was captured by the Portuguese who cut off his head.
Since 2003, November 20 has been the day of black consciousness, a symbol of resistance to oppression and a holiday in Brazil. This date is chosen in São Paulo, Rio De Janeiro and in many other cities of Brazil, to celebrate the anniversary of the death of Zumbi Dos Palmares.
